Hailey the Play Write
Our schools have a program for kids one day a week after school called Playwrites. Hailey and her best friend were in a class over the year and each produced a written play. Hailey decided the night before the play was due that the play wouldn't due and I agreed. She was overwhelmed and was not sure what to do. I told her that we can play "circle story" that is when we sit on the trampoline and tell a few lines of a story and then the next person adds to it and so on and so on. It is a really fun game and you come up with some great adventures with this game. Well, of course I couldn't add anything since it is her play so I had her start the circle story and just skip me and add to it again. This helped break her out of her writers block. So she dictated the play to me while I typed. We stayed up late into the night until it was completed and ready to turn in to the Playwrites program the next day. Well months have passed and I have not given it another thought. Until I learned that the Playwrites program hired professional actors to come to Hailey's school to act out her play and two other students plays for a school assembly. It was so fun to see her story acted out on stage in front of her Jr. High friends and listen to them clap for her when it was over. They pulled her up on stage where she gave a bow with the other two students and shook the actors hands. What a great experience! I can't imagine when I was in seventh grade having a play that I wrote acted out on stage like that. What a great experience for her. I am so glad she followed through and got the play in on time as there were other students who did not and were regretting it I am sure. She was congratulated throughout the day and it was just wonderful for her. She did a great job. I guess this is the benefit of living just a few miles away from Broadway in NYC. Hailey is such a talented writer and wonderfully creative.
